The first novel by Carl Hiaasen's ace Miami Herald crime-reporter colleague John Katzenbach stars a reporter who stumbles onto the story of his life in Miami's mean season, July. (It was adapted as the Kurt Russell/Mariel Hemingway film The Mean Season.) Katzenbach's tale blazes with local color, and his depiction of the newspaper life is accurate, entertaining, and animated by an interesting dilemma: What does a newshound do when he becomes part of the story he's covering?

That's what happens to Malcolm Anderson of The Miami Journal. One day in 1975, fate hands him Page One material: a beautiful teenager found with the back of her head removed by a .45 bullet. Katzenbach takes us through the reporter's paces: eliciting quotes from the victim's family and friends (the girls at school wonder who'll replace the deceased on the cheerleading squad); getting great "art" for the photographer; negotiating the story's space, timing, and emphases with the city editor.

But this is no ordinary killing. The only thing worse than a dead teen is a dead teen with a note in her pocket reading, "Number One." Worse yet, Malcolm gets a call at his desk from the "Numbers Killer," who taunts him with an elliptical account of his tormented childhood and violent Vietnam experiences. As Malcolm desperately tries to deduce the killer's motives and prevent the next murder, he wrestles with the terrible question of his own complicity. The bad guy here is just OK, but the reporter is a very good character, and the novel well merits its Edgar Award nomination. --Tim Appelo

Great read. Go find it in the nearest used book store

Any reader who enjoys reading serial killer novels must read this book. The interaction between the killer and the reporter contains some of the best dialogue I have ever read in a book of this type. Their conversations are definitely up there with some of the interactions in Thomas Harris' Hanibal trilogy. The protagonsit, a reporter, has to deal with the dilemma between his job as a reporter and his role as a citizen. This conflict adds wonderful insight into his character and his relationships with the secondary cast. The book is a fairly quick read, but is well written and definitely gives the reader something that one is not acccustomed to in these types of books. This is the kind of book that you should be searching the used books stores for. It is the first Katzenbach book and it absolutely will not be my last.

This book made J. Katzenback one of my favorite authors.

This book was the first book I had read from Mr. Katzenback, and is still probably my favorite. I passed the book along to my parents, friends, etc. and they all loved it. I love the fact that Mr. Katzenbach has a newspaper reporter background, because his book reflect his talent in writing. I have read all of his works, and because I am a true mystery thriller buff, I prefer those to the last recent Harts war, because I am not a fan of military novels as much, but my husband and all of his male co workers thought the book magnificent, and I have yet to get my hands on it. Mr. Katenbach, if you are listening, do you have any new books coming out soon. I am hoping for something along the lines of Mean Season 2, or something like that, not because your writing isn't just as wonderful in every book, but I read 3 to 4 books a week, and I have become somewhat finicky on what I like to read! Trying to expand my horizons..but those mysteries and your villians are some of the best villians I have read about. If you do read this and could let me know where your heart is leading you to in your next book and when you might be writing another, I would be thrilled to know. What a gift you have, it is rare that my husband and I read the same material, but we both love good writers, and you are one of the few that we both love. On a personal note, at 40 I am now at home on permant disability because of illness so books are my lifeline, and when I see a new J. Katzenbach, it is such a thrill, like I won a little lottery, and the thicker the book the better. So for this one fan I hope a mystery, serial killer (isn't that terrible no accounting for taste) book is coming soon. For such a pacifist, my friends tease me about my taste in books. Oh well. Awesome, fast-paced series starter with Templar Knights, magic, and vamps.

Whenever I got word that Debra Dunbar was writing an entirely new series outside of the Imp world, I knew that whatever it was, it would knock my socks off. Dunbar has a way with words, pardon the pun, and the characters she creates are always multi-dimensional, tough but not infallibly so, and the worlds she creates for these characters to inhabit are subtle, yet just as rich as the characters. Aside from all of the above, the biggest draw for me was the fact that this new series would have a Templar as the main character. Yes, you heard right: a mere human. Albeit a human with some magic, but human nonetheless.

In Dead Rising, readers are introduced to Solaria Angelique Ainsworth, a woman descended from centuries of Templar Knights. Up until this point, all of her family members, past and present, have accepted their fate and taken the Oath and its responsibilities without question. The sole exception being Aria herself. Unable to dedicate herself to knighthood for fear of losing who she is, she relocates to Baltimore in hopes of separating herself from her mother's constant Oath nagging, and making a life that's purely her own. Her need to have her own identity is strong, and as such, she's the black sheep of the Ainsworth clan.

Even without taking the Oath, Aria's need to protect and her need to guide the "Pilgrim's on the Path" is just as strong as her need to be recognized as a person and not just a Knight. There's quite a lot of internal struggling within Aria, and it will be interesting to see if she ever succumbs to both her family and the small part inside of her that sees the benefits of becoming a true Templar Knight.

Aside from Templars, Dead Rising also centers around vampires. The Knights and the vampires have a very uneasy truce that dates back centuries; a truce that must be navigated with trepidation. Dunbar's vampires, at their cores, are the monsters we expect when we hear "vampire". Although there are a few sexy ones thrown in for good measure (Hello, Dario :) ). Aria finds herself embroiled in vampire politics, much to her dismay, after being approached by said sexy vampire to decode a strange symbol that's been popping up in various places. With a whole lot of reluctance, Aria works side by side with the unpredictable clan in hopes of preventing death and destruction that ties back to a murder dating 40 years ago.

Dead Rising, in my estimation, is Dunbar's most ambitious urban fantasy to date. There aren't many mainstream UF series that center around Templars, and that element is really what made this story stand out for me. It also has the trademark humor and wit that I expect whenever I read anything by Debra, yet the feel and the tone is definitely more mature than her other series. Not that I'm comparing the two, mind you. Apples and oranges. There's a hint of romance, one that's fraught with danger, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how that's going to play out in the future.

Bottom line -- fantastic, fast-paced series starter with murder, magic, vampires, and a whole lot of action. I absolutely recommend Dead Rising and can only hope it's going to be another long-running series. Fingers crossed that it is :)

Couldn't put it down!

I'm a huge fan of Debra Dunbar's writing. I fell in love with her Imp series and have enjoyed everything of hers that I've read so far. I'm happy to say that this book did not disappoint! I'm going to skip the summary, since several others have already done a great job at giving you a general overlook of the book. But I will say that I truly enjoyed this novel, and I'm very glad I'd set aside half the day to read it (took about 5-6 hours, so not a terribly long book) because I couldn't put it down. It's a little different writing style than her other books, but I think any true fan of fantasy or paranormal will enjoy it. You can tell that this is the first of a series, as there is a lot of world building and character introduction, and I'm really looking forward to getting to know everyone better. It's told from the main character's pov, Aria, who is a Templar. I don't know much about Templars, so it was fun getting to know a bit about them. There def are some moral issues brought up that I found to be pretty interesting, and I'm interested to see how those issues play out in the series. I also really liked the main male lead, Dario. He is very complicated, and is not all "good", which I actually like, since I think it's more realistic. There is definitely some sexual tension between the main girl and him, and I'm reeeeeally hoping we'll see something sexy and juicy from them down the road lol. For those that don't like that sort of thing, however, just know that their aren't any love scenes in this book. I didn't see too much cursing either, but, to be honest, I don't always notice cursing. There are some proofing errors that kinda jarred me for a moment when I came across them, but all in all they didn't detract from my overall enjoyment of the book. The story is interesting and well done, with like able (or at least understood) "bad guys", and interesting main characters. I'm really looking forward to many more in this series, and am bummed the next one isn't out for 2 more months lol. If it was out right now then I guarantee I'd be reading it and likely staying up all night to finish it lol! All in all, another wonderful book DD! Looking forward to (hopefully!) many more books about Aria to come!

Amazing & officially on my auto-buy list

A quick historical reminder:
The Knights Templar is a religious order that can trace their origins to the First Crusades. They are essentially an elite force with two centuries worth of bloody history. I only mention this because the heroine in this story & her family have been & continue to be Knights Templar. Therefore the history is touched on throughout the story.

As a result she's a highly trained solider with a history major (specialty middle ages/religious studies) with no job experience & limited social skills...working as a barista.
Dario: Dario is second in command (what amounts to lieutenant) in the Baltimore vampire clan.
Plot:
The Mistress of the local vampire balaj (clan) Leonora request the gift of knowledge (investigate) from Aria. Not everything goes as planned for any of the parties involved being Aria is not a sworn knight, as such her behavior is not limited by The knight's responsibilities or oaths.
Romance:
None.
Dario & Aria have an ongoing "flirtatious" acquaintance. Well, what one may see as provocative advances another may think of as harassment.
Overall Thoughts:
No editing issues. The writing felt more mature than her imp series. The pacing was quick & action filled. I immediately became immersed in the world, plot & characters. I devoured this book in one sitting. The story wrapped up nicely, no cliffhangers or loose threads.
Favorite part of this book:
Aria's character in particular had amazing depth. IMO the templar knight's history along with Aria's facetious humor helped make her multidimensional. Dario & Aria's dialogue was also really entertaining.

He completed his bachelor's degree at Dickinson College in Pennsylvania and his graduate degrees at the University of Virginia. He is the author of over 100 professional articles on special education with particular emphases in the areas of intellectual disabilities and learning disabilities. In addition to co-authoring the prior nine additions of this textbook, he also is the co-author of Teaching Students With Special Needs In Inclusive Settings (sixth edition), Language Instruction For Students With Disabilities (fourth edition), Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder In The Classroom, Children And Adults With Learning Disabilities, Language Arts: Teaching Exceptional Students, and served as co-editor of the Conquest Of Mental Retardation. Dr. Polloway also served for six years as the editor of the journal, Remedial And Special Education. He has been honored as the 2007 Distinguished Alumnus Of The Curry School Of Education at the University of Virginia, the Burton Blatt humanitarian award from the Division on Autism and Developmental Disabilities of The Council For Exceptional Children, and Lynchburg College’s James A Houston award for scholarship.

James R Patton is an educational consultant and adjunct associate professor at the University of Texas at Austin. He received his master's and doctoral degree from the University of Virginia after completing the bachelor's degree at Notre Dame. He is a former high school biology teacher and elementary-level special education resource teacher. He has also taught students who were gifted and those who were gifted/learning disabled. His professional interests include transition, life skills instruction, adult issues related to individuals with special needs, behavioral intervention planning, study skills, and classroom accommodations. He has served on the national boards of the Division On Autism And Developmental Disabilities, The Council For Learning Disabilities, and The National Joint Committee On Learning Disabilities.

Loretta Serna is professor of special education at the University of New Mexico. After completing a Masters Degree in special education she taught 3rd grade students with emotional and behavioral disorders. She completed her doctoral degree in developmental and child psychology at the University of Kansas. In addition to her work on multiple versions of this textbook, Dr. Serna also was the principal investigator on several federal grants including those on the Self-Determination in Integrated Settings project, Social Skills for Young Children, and Evidence Based Interventions for Students with Severe Behavior Problems that focused on large scale investigation of the First Step to Success program. Her publications focus on the social behavior of students with behavior problems. She has significant experience working with adolescents in both individual and group work as well as with families of adolescents who are at risk for failure. Her research interests include social and self-determination skills for youth at risk, teacher preparation, and curriculum/program development.

The reason I gave this only 3 stars is so buyers will be cautious to check that all pages are included in their copy. I turned to chapter 7 yesterday only to find that my copy jumps from page 180 to 229. Don't be like me, facing an assignment deadline only to find the information you need is not included in your copy!

Otherwise, the content is helpful, and there is not too much writer grandstanding, as some course textbooks tend to have.

Really Liked It

4 1/2 stars. I thought this story was well done. I read the premise, and I couldn't understand how the author could make the H dump the h, break her heart, and then have them "fake" a relationship for her safety and still be believable. I really thought she pulled it off. I felt the characters and their motives were explained well, and I loved, loved, LOVED how the heroine did not make it too easy for the hero to get back in her good graces. Well written, with a good balance of romance and suspense. Spicy intimate scenes. My only complaint is I wish it was longer!

A 4.5 A very yummy adult shortish novel. We meet Jenna and Bryce when he breaks up with her in a most unforgivable manner. Even though the book is only 100 pages, right out of the gate, we get a clear picture of these two - they have a combustible chemistry that plays out in the bedroom but they each have shields that protect them from hurt. I really connected with Bryce - this is my second Allyson Young book and I absolutely love her alpha males - Bryce is a cop who has that protective, possessive thing down! Jenna is strong, seemingly knows the score but still finds herself emotionally vulnerable. The secondary characters are nicely fleshed out. Jenna's life is in danger and she has to deal with Bryce to help her. They have to work out their issues and the author handles it nicely. No drawn out angst like some of the new adults out there - no over the top drama. Just two adults making a decision to deal with the hard stuff and communicate. A nice taste of kink and some very hawt sexy times and a wee bit of suspense. Smoking hawt! Will be back for more of Ms Young's work.

Good recipe book, but lacks information related to quality assurance regarding incubation times, temperatures, atmospheres etc.

Contains a lot of media recipes. It does however lack information about what temperatures, incubation times and atmospheric conditions (ie aerobic, anaerobic, microaerophilic or capnophilic conditions etc.) to be used with the different media. Also no information on what control strains (reference ie ATCC) to use for quality assurance and also growth characteristics are missing. Also practical steps for preparation often seem to be incomplete. That is a pity - since it would have gotten full score if that information had been supplied.

Mainly it looks as if it was not microbiologists who wrote this book, but rather librarians.

Superb collection of media recipes

This is a superb collection of media recipes in one source. I have been consulting for a number of microbiological projects and this book is an excellent reference to help me with my clients. Highly recommended!
