Grade 6-9-Long before Homer, Sumerians were creatively tackling the human condition. Their epic, preserved by other Near Eastern cultures, focuses especially on themes of friendship and mortality. Gilgamesh is overactive and oversexed (McCaughrean handles this, and a later seduction scene, discreetly), and his status affords plenty of opportunities to act out. The gods balance his personality by matching him (jaded, cultured) with Enkidu (innocent, wild). The pair finds socially constructive outlets-and then Enkidu dies. Gilgamesh suddenly understands his own vulnerability, and sets out to seek immortality. His journey echoes in the Odyssey and in the biblical flood story. McCaughrean's retelling is superb. Faithful to the fragmentary originals, her adaptation adds inspired details, similes, dialogue, and description. It enriches readers' understanding without violating the source. Unlike David Ferry's spare, poetic redaction in Gilgamesh: A New Rendering in English Verse (Farrar, 1992), McCaughrean grippingly and tenderly elaborates. Her language is both vernacular and classic, her pace unslacking, her characterizations deft. This volume will add luster to the author's glittering reputation. The illustrations recall Charles Keeping's bold style; Parkins's thick, dark line gains energy from its rough, unfinished edges. Unframed vignettes seem to emerge out of the text; full-page pictures spill over to the facing page. The somber palette evokes the desert setting, and the style is slightly archaic and wholly vigorous. It would be a pity if the single instance of a bare bottom in one vignette discouraged purchase: this fabulous introduction to the epic tradition deserves a wide readership.

Gr. 6-9. McCaughrean employs her supple style in this version of the oldest recorded story in the world. Gilgamesh was a real king around 3000 B.C.E. in the Sumerian city of Uruk (now in Iraq). This tale, originally engraved on 12 stone tablets whose thousands of pieces are still studied and puzzled over, is rendered with simplicity and power. Gilgamesh finds a kindred spirit in Enkidu, the wild man, and the two of them together conquer the guardian of the forest and the bull of heaven. When Enkidu dies, Gilgamesh overwhelmed with the loss and terror of his own dying, goes on a long quest to find the secret of everlasting life, undergoing many trials and learning lessons. He hears the story of the flood--not much different from the biblical version. Siduri the innkeeper tells Gilgamesh the joys of life: "Children. That's the shape of happiness . . . Cherries in bed . . . Someone to sit with in the shade." Parkins' muscular images, inspired by Assyrian art and reminiscent of Leonard Fisher's art, are a fine foil for the text, which begs to be read aloud. GraceAnne DeCandido

Lyrical prose; great reading for 10 and up

I loved the lyrical prose in this adaptation of the epic of Gilgamesh. My 10-year-old son enjoyed it immensely. He had read Ludmilla Zeman's more simplified trilogy of lovely picture books based on the Epic of Gilgamesh, but he enjoyed this version much more because it is a more thorough recounting of Gilgamesh's adventures. I would recommend this as independent reading for mature 10-year-olds and up, or as a read-aloud for younger children (perhaps 8 and up), as long as they aren't easily overwhelmed by violence and extreme emotion in stories; I'd recommend reading it yourself first before introducing your child to the story, as this is a violent (toward both Man and Nature) and emotional tale, and might be too stressful for some children. Note that this is not a picture book, though the few illustrations (and many graphics) are very evocative.

Adam Houge is a remarkable man of faith. And not only has He got great faith, but he has written books like these that are the words of Jesus Christ that he has recorded and published in this set of 6 books.

Adam has 6 books in one here. Each book has 30 days worth of devotions where the Lord Jesus is speaking. So they are things that Jesus said to Adam, but after reading 3 of these books included I can tell you that most of these things Jesus says in these books is relevant to us all. Not only does Jesus speak but Adam meticulously backs up everything the Lord says with relevant scripture verses.

About the Author
I live in Essex with my son, who is studying at University, and my two cats, Puzzle and Bud. I’ve always loved writing and in January 2011 I got together with some friends and set up a writers’ group at our local library. One of our first guest speakers was a young lady called Penelope Fletcher who talked to us about self-publishing – I was so inspired I went back home, found some stories I’d written for my son when he was young and started the process of learning how to self-publish. I published 3 books in the Burly & Grum series and then in July 2012 was lucky enough to be signed up by GMTA. I’ve enjoyed every single second of my journey so far, learnt an incredible amount and I’m looking forward to the future!

Colorful,Creative and Christian

Max is a boy whose best friends are a bear named Burly and a groblin named Grum. Don't know what a groblin is? Neither did I until I read this book!

Burly is the conscience and rational, responsible one. Grum, as the name is short for, is the grumpy one. And then there's happy-go-lucky Max, the adventurous one. The three are about to undertake an adventure that leads them all to peril...

This book is the second in a series, but I didn't read the first and still found it fully functional as a stand alone. It is imaginative, full of whit and charm, and will make any child smile and wish they could have such adventures. After all, who hasn't wished that they could stumble upon an abandoned city in the woods?

The illustrations are terrific. They add to the story, and are well done. The story is easy going and subtle in the peril, but still make the reader jump and sit on the edge of their seat. Additionally, the Christian themes make it one that is good for young children without being too preachy.

In short, I love it. Its innocence makes it ideal to be read to younger readers (it's not too long - maybe 40 pages) or a good one for beginner chapter book readers. My son is 11, and I know he'll have a good time reading it, too.

I hope the author continues this trio's adventures, and I'll be buying the first in the series while staying on the look out for more! Additionally I will be featuring the book in my blog Spirit Filled Kindle

Adorable and Funny

A very good book for the young ones. I know my daughter was infatuated from the moment she saw Burly and Grum, Even taking her teddy bear and holding on tight to it through the whole book, which was a great thing for her as of late. Her attention span through chaptered books was starting to wan, I'm proud to say that she got a renewed strength The pictures helped a little too.

The story is cute and compelling of a boy, his bear and his groblin. They are always in adventure and constantly in trouble like children often are. With the bear being more of the wise old father figure that tries to keep them both on track.

The morals are amazing and something my daughter caught on to quickly. The mixture of thrills, comedy and adventure kept her enthralled and had my daughter begging for more, If anything I am glad to say that it's renewed her love of the chapter books and having mommy breathlessly reading them to her constantly a habit. I have to thank the author for giving us a wonderful story and wonderful characters to which I wish I had my own Burly or Grum to hug and have at night.

"BURLY AND GRUM AND THE SECRET CITY" BY KATE TENBETH

I just finished this book and I have to say it is simply adorable. There are fantastic morals in the story, lessons that every child should learn early on such as how it's wrong to hunt and harm animals, and how you can always count on your true friends to be there for you. The characters are cute and you can't help but to be drawn in by them. I love the fact that Kate also has elements of inspirational faith in her book such as the addition of the angel lovingly called Mike.

This book is a fantastic read and one I think children of all ages would enjoy. It has adventure, comedy, and thrills delivered in all the right amounts. My daughter is begging me to get her a Kindle so she can read it! I got a feeling she just might steal mine! The illustrations are also beautifully drawn, the artist has amazing talent. Thank you Kate for a beautiful story with characters that I could definitely see as stuffed toys! You just want to squeeze them tight!

A beautiful historical love story

Jack Sprott has written a beautiful love story, rich with history and populated with multidimensional characters you won't soon forget.

The story is based on events that occurred in South Carolina in the early 1700s. There are a few places (especially when the author vividly describes the torture techniques used by the Indians of the day) that will make a squeamish reader wince, but history buffs will love the detail.

The amazing friendships and romances among the characters move the story along at a brisk pace. This is a novel that can be read for pure entertainment and/or to learn more about the history of the early settlement of South Carolina.

Informative, yet hilarious.

Absolutely hilarious! I've been a fan of Raydio G since he along with his group HotStylz released a hit song with rapper Yung Joc titled "Lookin' Boy." The book touches on a lot of areas, not just relationships but life. His writing style is both humorous and informative. Also, this is a book for both men and women. 2 thumbs up. I will definitely buy the next book.
