Excellent!!

This is one of the best books I have read this year. It is both funny and touching by turns - and the writer has captured the trials and tribulations of adolescence to perfection.
You will come to genuinely care for the feisty heroine as she sets out on the bumpy road to womanhood and you will find yourself closing the book with a sigh of mingled satisfaction at a well-told tale - and regret that it is finished.
If you have to choose any book, make it this one. You won't regret it!!

A heroine for eveyone

Female protagonists, if you prefer.
Being a guy I can't think of that many off the top of my head. If I had to name three, second and third place would go to Emma Peel (of TV fame, Diana Rigg of "The Avengers") and Wonder Woman (of comic book fame).
Lizzy McMann would top my list.
So who's Lizzy McMann? Like the other choices on my list, she's a fighter, a strong spirit who doesn't give in to adversity. But unlike Emma Peel or Wonder Woman, she doesn't possess any extraordinary talents - well, outside of dogged determination and a wicked sense of humor.
Lizzy is the heroine/female protagonist of Bonnie Shimko's novel, "Letters in the Attic." She's caught between being an adult - acting as a mother to her mother - and being an adolescent, trying to fit in with her peers, dealing with feelings of love for the first time.
Shimko has done a great job of making Lizzy a real person, a character with depth. Beating up bad guys becomes boring after a while; even an overgrown adolescent such as yours truly needs more in characterization and conflict. (Sorry, Mrs. Peel and WW, but you couldn't cut half of the adversity that Lizzy faces.)
"Letters in the Attic" is an impressive debut novel that many readers will enjoy. Lizzy McMann is a heroine for everyone.

a wonderful read

Bonnie Shimko has mastered the art of storytelling in her Letters in the Attic. The well-paced novel introduces us to a feisty heroine and involves us in the varied relationships she has with the other characters.
I immediately connected with the characters, especially 12-year-old Lizzy. Lizzy is the girl all of us wish we could be (or could have been), displaying a maturity and dignity level beyond her young years. Additionally, Lizzy's biting wit comes alive in the dialogue. I haven't love a storybook heroine that much since Jo in Little Women.
Letters in the Attic is an engaging, quick read. It would be a great discussion starter for parents and teens. I recommend it to anyone who remembers what it is like being an adolescent.

DAVID GOTTLIEB is a free-lance writer and affordable housing developer. Born and raised in the Chicago area, David underwent lay ordination as a Zen Buddhist in May 2002. He received his B.A. from Amherst College, where he was awarded the Peter Burnett Howe Prize for Prose Fiction Writing, and his Master of Fine Arts from the University of North Carolina. RABBI DR. AKIVA TATZ, South African born physician and author, lectures at the Jewish Learning Exchange in London and internationally on Jewish philosophy and medical ethics. His book "Anatomy of a ASearch" documents the transition of secular lifestyles into the world of observant Judaism. In "Living Inspired" he explores fundamental themes in Torah thought; his "Worldmask" reveals depths beneath the surface of everyday experience. Much more than (and not attempting to be) a comparative analysis

This is just an incredible, one-of-a-kind book if you want to understand the unknown tradition of spirituality in classical Judaism.�

I have seen reviews that accuse the book of not delivering a thorough comparative analysis of Buddhism and Judaism. However , the book flap makes very clear that the goal of this book is only to clarify the depth of spirituality in classical Judaism, which may be of interest to Jews who have never experienced the spirituality that they seek in Judaism, and therefore seek it in Buddhism.�

On that basis, I find it amazing. It opens doors to a tradition of spirituality, �thought and self-mastery whose very existence is almost unknown.� after many centuries of interpreting Judaism through the lens of Greek / Christian theology and mindsets, here is a book that demonstrates an organic, profound spirituality in classical Judaism that was lost in the Western 'translation'.

I learned more about Judaism from this book than I ever did in synagogue

I'm a Jew who, like David, practices Buddhism because it is accessible and because the Dharma speaks to me in a profound way. I love this book because it taught me more about Judaism than I have learned in my 47 years and despite hundreds of hours of Hebrew school and Bat Mitzvah prep. Now I can say that I actually GET what Judaism is about, and I thank Rabbi Akiva for his beautiful way of explaining its very deep concepts.

Something that frustrated me (as a practitioner of a different branch of Buddhism [Theravada]), is that Zen seems almost like a foreign religion to me. Although David's questions completely resonated with me, the way Zen answers the questions is very different from the way Theravada addresses them. It made me concerned that Rabbi Akiva was getting a biased view of Buddhism, but then again, he is so well educated that he probably understands the Theravada perspective as well.

This is a fascinating book for any JewBu or any Jew who wants to understand what Judaism is really about.

Enjoyable book. Tatz presents thorough answers to some key Buddhist ideas and really draws out the distinctions between a Buddhist and Jewish worldview. Could use citations, be better organized, and have an index.

This book was sexy but it still felt as though boyfriend was being cuckolded because he'd been patient for so long only to lose gf's 1st experience. Also, she got mad at him for trying but turned on by Ben when he pushed. Just felt like a cuckold experience.

R.C. Hibbeler graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana with a BS in Civil Engineering (major in Structures) and an MS in Nuclear Engineering. He obtained his PhD in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from Northwestern University.

Hibbeler’s professional experience includes postdoctoral work in reactor safety and analysis at Argonne National Laboratory, and structural and stress analysis work at Chicago Bridge and Iron, as well as Sargent and Lundy in Chicago. �He has practiced engineering in Ohio, New York, and Louisiana.

Hibbeler currently teaches both civil and mechanical engineering courses at the University of Louisiana, Lafayette. In the past he has taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana, Youngstown State University, Illinois Institute of Technology, and Union College.

About the Author

Bajan-born Steve Devaux is a project management theorist, consultant, and academic. I have read several great golf books lately but this one really stood out

I have read several great golf books lately but this one really stood out. Once I opened it I could not put it down. The mental game in golf is the key to take your game to the next level. This book was that X factor that helped me understand why I was acting like such a hormonal teenager on the course and how to stop these bad habits. The methods have really helped me get better, but more importantly it helped me enjoy the game more. In fact, the first 18 holes after reading this was some of my best and most enjoyable golf ever- after 8 years of playing. I still had my outbursts, but I was conscious of them and recorded them. By the 10th hole, I was so in the zone I was really surprising myself with the accuracy, distance and a short game I didn't even know I had. What a feeling. Sure there were the "thats not what I expected" moments but they did not ruin the experience of a great round! Highly recommend this book. I immediately gave it to my best bud who had literally thrown his club 20 feet in the very same game. I said read this it will change your golf life and our playing relationship.

Simple but solid reminders

As the author requests at the beginning of the book, this book will only help those that approach its message and tips with an open mind. Naturally skeptical, it took a few chapters before I was able to stop silently criticizing the flowery "zen" language and new-age metaphors and actually hear the message being delivered.

Once I did, however, it was well worth it. As I stated in the review title, the author offers simple but solid tips and concepts to improve the mental aspects of your golf game. At first blush a lot of it appears to be common sense (stay in the present, choose positive self talk over negative, be curious), but it's funny how often we humans (and golfers) tend to ignore this advice and continue committing the same mistakes time and time again.

And, at the very least, the author is 100% correct: if you spend even a fraction of time replacing bad habits with good ones, and replace frustration with intrigue, you will undoubtedly enjoy your rounds (and life) a lot more. I know I sure do.

Great book, lower scores, easy read.

This is a great book that helps you think outside of the box and control your thoughts on the golf course. If you are like me, then you can only think about the water hazard up ahead when you are launching your ball off the tee box... Which only leads to your ball actually landing in the water like some self-fulfilling prophecy. This book helps you control those thoughts and envision yourself playing more successfully, which hopefully leads to a self-fulfilling prophecy of lower scores.

This book is a very easy read and even as someone who doesn't read a whole lot, it was hard to put down but easy to read one chapter at a time.
