Nancy Lancaster: English Country House Style, by Martin Wood

Nancy Lancaster, who was born in 1897 into a wealthy Virginian family, became one of the greatest influences on interior decoration and garden design in Great Britain and America in the second half of the 20th century. She created what is known today as the 'English Country House Style' – a mixture of faded colors, chintzes and painted and antique furniture. In the garden, she worked in a formal yet romantic neo-Georgian style, which is still a strong spirit in British garden design. This book examines Nancy's contribution to the arts of interior decoration and garden design by chronicling her own homes and gardens –and her extraordinary life. Mirador, her family's Virginian country house, was to remain her key inspiration throughout her life. Nancy herself, her houses, her gardens and her friends are shown in an intriguing collection of photographs by distinguished photographers of the era, including Horst and Cecil Beaton.

Splendid Account of Nancy Lancaster, Her Homes and English Country Style
By L. M. Keefer
If you enjoy design history, Nancy Lancaster is one of the originators of the influential English country style. After a divorce from one of her English husbands, she purchased from an English design firm COLEFAX & FOWLER where she instantly became partners with John Fowler. Their talents combined in an inspired partnership.

In this book, author Martin Wood organizes its chapters around Nancy's homes, and takes us on a tour of the homes and gardens: Kelmarsh Hall, Ditchley Park, Colefax & Fowler Maisonette with its infamous yellow room, Haseley Court, and the Coach House and Orangerie at Haseley Court. Although some of the photos are black and white, there are enough large color photos to satisfy. Wood sprinkles the narration with anecdotes about Nancy, her family and friends. There are also images of painted illustrations of her Ditchley home.

This is a sympathetic portrayal of Nancy whose lively, witty, and charming essence was captured in her decoration of her homes. Many American designers working today claim Lancaster, and her partner Fowler, were hugely influential in the evolution of their style. Mark Hampton declared she was the most amazing woman he had met. You will enjoy meeting her in this book, too.

Old Times There Are Not Forgotten
By Amazon Customer
What attracted me to this book was a subtle theme in Nancy Lancaster's life that influenced her work: nostalgia for the past. Growing up in bucolic Albemarle County, Virginia, she absorbed the values of her relations still coming to terms with a changing way of life in the post-Reconstruction South. As an adult, she arrived in England in the early 1920's to encounter a similar adjustment after another war — the Great War — had brought loss and change to the way of life of the aristocracy in whose circle she moved. A native Virginian myself, feeling that the world in which I was raised is itself vanishing, I sought inspiration and consolation from Lancaster's personal journey through the changing vicissitudes of life.

In terms of her homes and their furnishings, her wealth made possible choices that the typical reader cannot possibly entertain. Being exposed to the best does help train the eye to recognize "better," however. And, thank goodness for her colleague John Fowler's lifting up the virtues of "humble elegance," which even she embraced! Even the commoner can create a room that appears "used and enjoyed," and "mellow, elegant and unpretentious," to cite the author's descriptions, and there is plenty of inspiration to be found (in text and photos) as Martin Wood tells Lancaster's life story house by house. As interesting are the author's occasional asides, such as his opinion that modern bathrooms clad from top to bottom in hard surfaces are "reminiscent of a mortuary." The individual who values home as central to a graciousness in life will find inspiration in this book.

Upson Downs: Nancy Lancaster abroad
By Jason M
I bought this book by Martin Wood along with his book about John Fowler. I enjoyed learning about my fellow Virginian and her adventures in merrie old England, watching her become Sister Parish to John Fowler's Albert Hadley (or, maybe, vice versa). I enjoyed seeing all the photos of her various homes, and having her ideas presented in one volume. It appears that hers is the relaxed style that most Americans associate with the English Country House look. This book is a joy to own.
