About the Author
Donatella Melucci was born and raised in Italy. She earned her Laurea in Lingue e Letterature Straniere from the University of Bari, Italy, and received a doctorate in English Rhetoric/Composition & Linguistics from Arizona State University where she taught for many years. She is now a Visiting Assistant Professor at Georgetown University in Washington DC. Her field of specialization is methodologies for teaching Italian as a second/foreign language. Her studies have also focused on the use of technology in foreign language classes.
Elissa Tognozzi (Ph.D. Italian, UCLA) is Senior Lecturer (SOE) in the Department of Italian at UCLA. As Director of Italian Language Studies, she teaches graduate seminars in methods and in technology, coordinates the language program, and supervises the department's teaching assistants. Her upper-division courses include advanced composition, culture, opera, and theater. In addition, she is undergraduate advisor. From 2003 to 2008, she was chair of the AP Italian Development Committee. She was editor of the American Association of Teachers of Italian (AATI) newsletter and is currently the elected representative for AATI for California.

NO ONLINE ACCESS

It says it comes with access to the online material but don't believe them unless you speak to someone. So frustrating, starting off the quarter behind in my class.

The online component is clearly rushed. The answer key is embarrassingly rife with errors. It feels sloppily edited, as if nobody bothered to go through and carefully make sure that the answers to the exercises were correct. The problem starts around the middle of the book and only gets worse from there. I've often had to figure out which incorrect answer the key wants me to put (instead of the one that I know is correct) in order to earn points. The sheer quantity of the errors really harms the learning experience.
In addition, even for some of the exercises that don't have mistakes in the answer key, the design and instructions for the exercises are laughable. One exercise was a fill-in-the-blank where it asked to "conjugate the verb with the right tense" with absolutely no context clues in the sentence to tell us what tense we were supposed to use. Another exercise on pronouns asked us to answer the question "did you see (male name) and (female name)?" It prompted us with "no, (other male name)," so I answered "I didn't see THEM, but I saw (other male name)." That was marked as incorrect, and the answer was given as "I didn't see HER, but I saw (other male name)," even though I was prompted to indicate that I didn't see EITHER of the people originally mentioned but another guy entirely.
If you decide to buy this textbook, beware of the online component. If you're an instructor, allow students to see the answer key. It's better to have a few lazy students copy and paste the answers (they're only hurting themselves, ultimately) than to punish hardworking students for the online component's mistakes.

Good concept but needs better developement

Lots of information here, sometimes difficult to find. The idea of the piazza as the cultural center of Italy is great, but it could have a better tie-in. The accompanying on-line materials are not easy to navigate, either. I feel like the publisher is trying to make a magazine-style textbook with a website learning tool, but is not very accomplished at either.The choice of information is appropriate, but I doubt that I'd ever be able to utilize it on my own. Fortunately, I'm using the text in a face-to-face class and the excellent teacher of the course is able to help us wade through and make sense of the information provided.
