George Altman grew up in the segregated South but through a mix of timing and opportunity was able to participate in the sport at more levels of competition than perhaps anyone else who has ever played the game, starting in the 1940s and concluding in the 1970s. Not only did Altman play baseball at all of the usual kids' levels, he played college baseball at Tennessee State University, played for the Kansas City Monarchs during the waning days of the Negro Leagues, played for the U.S. Army in service competition, played winter league ball in Cuba and Panama, spent nine years in the majors with the Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals and New York Mets as a two-time All-Star outfielder, and then culminated his remarkable career by playing in Japan where he was a regular All-Star. For Altman, it was a case of "Have bat, will travel." When it comes to baseball, Altman has seen it all and he offers illuminating observations about teams, fans and the game as he journeyed around the world to play it.

About the Author
George "Tiny" Altman is retired from major league baseball.
Lew Freedman has worked on staffs of several newspapers, including the Chicago Tribune, Anchorage Daily News and Philadelphia Inquirer. The winner of more than 250 journalism awards, Freedman has written 52 books. He lives in Columbus, Indiana.

This is more like bios I have read about Hack Wilson

Just finished George's book. This is not a work along the lines of "The Luckiest Man". This is more like bios I have read about Hack Wilson, Pop Lloyd & Jimmie Foxx. The difference is Big George is still alive and we get his memories first hand.
It is a quick and easy read. I would have liked more detailed season by season report of his time in the Majors. However, please note that this book was written some time after George's career ended. In all fairness, try to remember what you did 30-40 years ago in enough detail to write a book.
Lew Freedman sets up each chapter with a summary of what George is going to talk about. Then George recalls his memories. For what it is, I give "George Altman: My Baseball Journey from the Negro Leagues to the Majors and Beyond", 4 out of 5 stars.
It is a fun, enjoyable and interesting read.

George Altman Book

My wife purchased this book for me. When I was boy in the early 60's, George Altman was my favorite Cubs player! During my first baseball game at age 10 at Wrigley Field in the summer of 1961, I saw George hit a triple, and I was thrilled! This book is excellent and tells the story of how he triumphed and became baseball player in the final year of the Negro league, a MLB player, and a star in Japanese baseball despite obstacles along the way in his youth and beyond. I was recently honored and fortunate enough to personally meet George. He is still an athlete, a fierce competitor, and overall a very nice man.

Altman was a pretty good player in his own right

Was a very young boy when George Altman played for Cubs. His career overlapped future Hall of Famers Ernie Banks Billy Williams and Ron Santo among many others in his career. Altman was a pretty good player in his own right. If you remember the era he played in or are a baseball historian very interesting book.
